What Is Tajweed?

Why it matters practically

Arabic has pairs of letters that sound almost identical to an English speaking ear but are entirely different words. Getting the letter wrong can change the meaning of what you are reciting. Tajweed is what stops that happening.

There is also a simpler reason. Recitation with correct Tajweed sounds unmistakably different. Most people can hear it even without knowing a single rule.

What it actually includes

• Makharij, the exact point each letter is articulated, from the lips back to the throat.
• Sifaat, the qualities of each letter, such as heavy or light, whispered or voiced.
• Madd, how long a vowel is held, which is counted rather than guessed.
• Noon and meem rules, how these letters change beside others.
• Waqf, where you may stop and where stopping breaks the meaning.

Learning it by ear

You can read every rule in an afternoon. Applying them while reciting takes months, because the mouth has to build habits the brain already understands. That gap is the whole reason a teacher is needed: you cannot hear your own mistakes, and a recording cannot correct you.

When to start

The foundations begin inside Noorani Qaida, since correct letter articulation is Tajweed. Full rules come once a student reads the Quran itself. At Naeem Quran Academy, Tajweed is built into Quran reading classes and is never charged as a separate course.
